Protect Your Data from All Threats!

A lot has changed in the past few years. Organizations have adapted to a remote workforce and are increasingly storing their data and applications in the cloud, taking advantage of the scalability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness of cloud solutions. Meanwhile, data security regulations and compliance requirements continue to evolve, becoming more stringent and complex, necessitating constant vigilance and adaptation to ensure adherence and protect sensitive information.

While ransomware is one of the most dangerous threats, leading to devastating data loss scenarios, it's not the only reason data can be lost. Human error and hardware failure are the leading causes of corrupted or deleted files, followed by theft, natural disasters, and common accidents - like spilling a drink on your laptop, which can cause irreparable damage to your device and the data stored within.

Protect-Against-Threats

To avoid serious damage to your business, digital memories, and other important data, you need to be able to recover quickly from any of these scenarios. This means implementing a robust data backup solution, regularly updating security protocols, and educating employees on best practices for data protection and recovery. To help ensure that you can recover quickly in the event of a disaster, we've compiled helpful tips to guide you in developing a reliable backup strategy.

Data Loss Can Happen to Anyone

What you do to get back up and running quickly is the important part.

Cybercriminals have gotten creative with their methods by utilizing social engineering and AI. Ransomware has become far more widespread across the board. Did you know:

59% of organizations were hit by Ransomware in 2024.

NovaBACKUP ensures that you can secure and recover your critical data, locally or in the cloud, to get your organization back to full productivity following any data loss event.

Prevent-Ransomware-Attack

Threats like ransomware and even everyday system updates, installations, and changes are the reason your backup needs to be reviewed regularly. Check the following:

  • Have you tested the recoverability of your backups and scheduled regular recovery tests?
  • Have you added all new applications and data sources to your backup plan?
  • Have you recently reviewed your long-term data retention requirements?
  • Are you following best practices for local and offsite backups?

A solid backup strategy is crucial to ensure you can restore your data and systems easily in the event of a disaster.

Three Simple Backup Tips

Leverage these straightforward best practices to improve the health of your backups and reduce the risk of irreversible data loss.

Follow the 3-2-1 rule

The 3-2-1 backup rule has been around for a long time. It is simple, easy to remember, and ensures efficient data recovery. The rule states that three copies of data should be backed up to two different backup media, one of which should be offsite.

Over the years, the rule has been adapted and expanded. However, the basic idea remains the same: create multiple copies of your data and store them in different locations so that you have a recovery option for all data loss scenarios.

To further simplify the 3-2-1 rule, NovaBACKUP's Hybrid Backup feature first backs up data locally (for fast recovery) and then synchronizes changes to the cloud. This ensures fast recovery times while maintaining offsite protection without having to manage separate backup jobs.

Back Up Everything You Care About Regularly

Imagine accidentally deleting a project you've been working on for weeks, suffering a hard drive failure, or having your computer stolen. There are several scenarios in which we can lose data and, without a solid backup plan, never recover it.

The right backup frequency depends on how much data loss (RPO - recovery point objective) and downtime (RTO - recovery time objective) you can realistically tolerate. This means that for data that is not critical to your business, a weekly backup may be sufficient, whereas for data that is critical to your business, you will want to back up your data at least daily, if not hourly.

Automate Your Backup Schedule and Test Your Restore

With NovaBACKUP you can schedule your backups to run automatically. Don't forget to monitor your available disk space to make sure you don't run out.

In addition, you should:

  • Regularly test your backups (ideally quarterly) and verify that they can recover your data and systems.
  • Check your backup logs and verify that the backup is working and sending your data to the local and offsite storage.
  • Make sure the storage media is still working and doesn't have, i.e., any bad blocks.
  • Ensure sure you have access to all passwords and encryption keys to quickly unpack your backups.

NovaBACKUP includes everything you need to automatically and regularly back up your PCs and servers to local and offsite storage for complete data protection.
